Phosphoric Acid – Industrial Grade (Thermal Process)
Industrial-grade phosphoric acid produced by the thermal process represents the highest-purity form of commercially available phosphoric acid.
Unlike the more common wet process, which involves the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid, the thermal process produces phosphoric acid by burning elemental phosphorus in air to form phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅), which is then hydrated with water or dilute phosphoric acid.
This manufacturing route yields a product of exceptional purity, typically with a P₂O₅ concentration of 75–85%, and with minimal impurities such as heavy metals, fluorides, and sulfates.
The resulting liquid, clear and colorless to pale yellow, is suitable for demanding applications where contaminants present in wet-process acid would be problematic.
Thermal-process phosphoric acid is used in high-value applications, including food and beverage production (as an acidulant and pH regulator), pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronic-grade chemicals, specialty detergents, and metal surface treatment where cleanliness and precise composition are critical.
Although it is more expensive than wet-process acid due to higher energy requirements and the cost of elemental phosphorus, its superior quality justifies its use in applications that require strict purity standards.
The product typically meets or exceeds food-grade and technical-grade specifications, making it the preferred choice for industries where product quality, regulatory compliance, and consistent performance are paramount.
